It is becoming more common to incorporate wind turbines into buildings as a way to increase a building’s sustainability and to display its green credentials. However, the effective use of wind turbines in an urban environment is very different from the use of turbines on traditional wind farms.
There are a number of considerations for any building-integrated turbine project:
The effects of the urban surroundings and building aerodynamics on wind conditions at the turbines
The effects of those wind conditions on optimal turbine placement
The accurate prediction of wind power output for building-integrated turbines
Compared to the regional wind conditions, the winds near the building surface will typically be gustier and more uneven across the turbine blades, which will affect the turbine’s performance. This is because of the influence of neighboring structures and the effects of the building itself.
